"There is nothing which has yet been contrived by man, by which so much happiness is produced as by a good Tavern or Inn."
Samuel Johnson
The Inn
The White Lion Inn is a family run country village rooming Inn and is a pleasant mixture of thatch, weathered slate and red brick, featuring oak beamed dining rooms and bar with winter warming log fires, comfortable leather lounge armchairs and settees to sink into and quality rooming accommodation for the overnight guest.
Our friendly staff provide a relaxed and informal atmosphere, serving great food, excellent real ales, lagers and beers together with delicious wines to make your visit as pleasurable an experience as is possible. The six country style bedrooms offer comfortable bed and breakfast accommodation with pleasant views of the pretty village and the attractive courtyard garden and thatched barns.
We are family and dog friendly and welcome wiped muddy boots, children off the leash and dogs on.
Built in 1611 The Inn took advantage of the important coach link that ran along the then main highway between Winchester and Andover providing warm and welcome hospitality to the hardy traveller and fodder and stabling for the carriage horses. The Inn also stabled it's own horses in order to provide the extra horse power needed to navigate and pull the heavy coaches up and down the steep gradient known as "The Old Hill" which leads from Wherwell to Andover; these horses were referred to as the "Cock" horse.
